Doxies from the Doggie Diner

While clicking through Flickr the other day I came across this photo of giant “weiner dog” chefs on a trailer.
The dapper Dachshunds were apparently part of the signage for the Doggie Diner Hot Dog Chain that was around the San Francisco Bay area between 1949 and 1986. All that remains of the restaurants now are these big doxie heads that stood on poles above the buildings. The story isn’t entirely sad. Several years ago the Ocean Beach Historical Society permanently preserved one of the famous doggie heads. It can now be found in the median strip at Sloat Boulevard and 45th Avenue in San Francisco.
