Don’t get me wrong, I like cats (we have four), but I’ve always thought that dogs were smarter. Sure, cats have that cool and aloof act that makes them seem intelligent, but when it gets right down to it, dogs are a lot better at figuring stuff out. Just ask Franzi — she figured out how to move chairs so she can jump up into them to get to the cats food. I’ve never seen one of our cats do that (or even bother to try).

Now a psychologist at the Exeter University in the UK seems to have settled the debate. Cats aren’t as clever as we think, and perform worse than dogs when it comes to tasks like solving a simple problem to get at food. So now when someone starts bragging about how much smarter their cat is than your dog, you can say “oh really?” and point them to this research.
